It’s amazing to me how bad some commercials can be. I think it started with the Encyclopedia Britannica boy commercials in the 80’s… Now we have modern day stinkers…Like these… up there for some of the most annoying commercials to date are the ask.com commercials:

Let’s make up for it with a commercial that’s actually funny: The guy from the office with Dwight Howard: The Jack Sikma line and the bend the spoon lines are priceless…

House and Elbow

If you’ve seen the promo for the new House season (which looks awesome) you’re probably wondering the name of the song that plays during it. The song is called “Grounds For Divorce” and it’s by a band called Elbow. They are opening up for Coldplay right now and I was lucky enough to see them last month. They were awesome (both Elbow and Coldplay). The lead singer for Elbow reminds me of a younger Eric Clapton (Cream years). He has a great voice live. It actually sounds better live than on CD.

Fringe and the Fibonacci Sequence

I did my Masters research paper on the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence. I’m a math teacher and math enthusiast. I’m also a huge fan of the show Fringe. There was a “geek” moment when I noticed that on the commercials (every one of them) for Fringe episodes they would show the Golden Rectangle and Golden Spiral in the background.

If you don’t know what it looks like here is a picture of it (not from the commercial though):

I also noticed that during the episodes, when it says “Fringe will return in 60 seconds” or “Fringe will return in 90 seconds” they show pictures that sometimes relate to the Golden Ratio. Here are some examples:

When studying the Golden Ratio one learns that flowers (and many many other things in nature) correspond to the numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89, …). Flowers specifically usually have pedals numbering a number in the sequence. A daisy (pictured above) has 21 petals, black eyed susan has 13 petals, field daisy has 34 petals, bloodroot has 8 petals, etc.

This one is obvious since the frog has the symbol of “phi” which is the letter of the Golden Ratio (which is approximately 1.618). It’s like “pi” which everyone has heard of in math which stands for 3.14 (approximately), but only a different number. Here’s another picture of it from the web:

You can clearly see that it is on the frogs back…

Two things here with this picture. First we have the horn itself that is in the shape of the Golden Spiral (which actually happens in the real world). Second, you can see (if you look closely) that the digits of phi (1.618…) are listed on the horn…

The seahorse’s tail is in the shape of the Golden Spiral and if you look closely you can see the Golden Rectangle and Spiral in the middle of it’s body (stomach area).

This is probably the tip of a very large iceberg knowing JJ Abrams. The big question is “Why the Golden Ratio?” I’m not sure but it sure is fun finding examples of it in the show!
